January 2010: Month In Review

Naturally. Those of you who have followed the Month in Reviews for the past three months are likely on the same page: I spend an obscene amount of money on MMOs, whether it be buying, re-subscribing, or just playing them for free. What you don’t know is that, while writing up my topics for the first MMO Fallout podcast, which with luck will have launched last week, I made a list of every MMO I was playing, and found several that I missed from last month. Yes, looking back at A Month In Review: December 09, there were several titles I MISSED . So without further ado, I already have my pillow to cry in after proof-reading this article. More after the break. Started Playing: Face of Mankind: Face of Mankind is a freemium title where multiple factions fight for control over nodes, in a mix between The Matrix Online, Planetside, and Eve Online. The game is run by the players, who elect leaders who decide which faction they are aligned with, at war with, or even at a cease fire. The game has an extensive crafting system, and even a police faction where players can be promoted in their faction to be able to arrest others. A penalty point indicates how much time you spend in jail if you break the law. Re-subscribed To: Lord of the Rings Online: I have wanted to re-subscribe to Lord of the Rings Online ever since I bought the collector’s edition for a dollar many eons ago following a Christmas sale. One thing I will recommend is to never install an MMO from the CD if the CD is older than the first expansion. After a long arduous process of uninstalling, deleting, and then downloading the newest client from Turbine’s website, I finally got the game installed and found one of the best MMO experiences I have ever had. Lord of the Rings Online has a lot going for it, and is second to World of Warcraft in terms of polish, although I’m sure the lack of meaningful PvP will put off many players. The epic quests are quite cinematic, with action playing out before the player’s eyes, live, to create a fluid storyline. I can see myself playing Lord of the Rings Online for a long time to come, which spells bad for my wallet. Everquest: The release of Underfoot was just the reason I needed to re-subscribe to Everquest, and not much has changed since I last played. For some reason that every developer should follow with me for my own good, Sony felt the need to deny my card, so I need to use game cards to play. Is it worth getting into Everquest? Absolutely. Beta Testing: Mortal Online: I am still in disbelief that Star Vault wanted to launch Mortal Online in the condition it is in. Is it shaping up as a decent game? Absolutely. What chance does Mortal Online have of succeeding in its current state? Not a snowball’s chance in hell. Is it in a stable form to launch and gain subscribers? Absolutely not. It is January 10th as I begin writing the January Month In Review, so I’ll leave a prediction that I won’t edit out no matter what happens: Mortal Online won’t be going live this month. I won’t even touch this in February when I’m putting the final touches on it. Allods Online: If World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online had a baby, it might look like Allods Online. It is easy to make similarities between WoW and Allods, and you would not be too off base to do so. Will Allods Online improve on World of Warcraft’s shortcomings? We can hope. Will it be as successful? Don’t put words in my mouth. Star Trek Online: By the time this article is published, Star Trek Online preorderers will have been playing for several days, and the late adopters will be hitting the live servers on launch day. So the beta ends late this month, and overall it has been a fun experience. It certainly convinced me to buy the collector’s edition. Pets Vs Monsters: I have no idea why I am beta testing this, other than to see how Funcom’s first breakthrough into the child’s market will go. PvM follows the diablo formula of fighting mobs in public areas, then going into random instanced zones to fight bigger versions and do missions. You ride on a creature of your choice (you gain more of them throughout the game) and level up by completing quests (Kill and fetch quests) while raising your stats by collecting equipment of like color. Currently the currency is for nothing more than mana/health potions, which you will not need to spend any on. I have made it over level 20 and currently have not died once. A fun game if you are a kid, and I stress a  kid. Still Playing: Runescape: After some grinding to get a quest finished, I think I’ve finally gotten back involved in Runescape. I look forward to 2010’s year of weekly updates. Champions Online: I said this last month, and my point still stands: While I’m still on the edge whether I will continue subscribing when my six month bundle ends in April, I am genuinely trying to stay involved in the title. Having finally fought my nemesis, and won, more avenues that once were out of reach are now becoming available to me. Ask me again next month. City of Heroes: Unlike Champions Online, I am literally coasting on City of Heroes free. Despite being a solid game, City of Heroes could do well to go under some changes in mechanics and controls to make various areas more fluid. I may consider subscribing once my free time runs out. Although extenuating circumstances may change that. Canceled: None Uninstalled: I added this category because I have a habit of keeping MMOs installed after I cancel the subscription, because of my habit of re-subscribing. Once I uninstall a game, it’s usually because I have no intention of playing it, ever again. Age of Conan: I know the large amount of traffic that is missing the Age of Conan unlimited free trial offer will angry at me, but I still uninstalled Age of Conan. The “action combat” feels like a gimmick to me, with the attacks basically being different melee attacks. Taking “side blow” and turning it into “attack to the left.” Aion: Given some…recent developments between myself and NCsoft, I decided to stop beating around the bush and realized that Aion is not my game, free time or not. I don’t think NCsoft’s constant promises of reducing the grind will convince me to come back, so here I am. Darkfall: I finally decided to uninstall Darkfall because, no matter how many times I re-subscribe, I know that I will end up cancelling for the same reason: Darkfall is a great game, but there is not enough variety to keep me interested. There are only so many times I can kill and loot the same creatures before I take the arrow and fire it into my cranium. Dungeon Fighter Online: This is one of the beta tests I forgot to mention last month. Dungeon Fighter Online is a 2d side scrolling beat-em up. Although I enjoyed the gameplay, the lack of enforcement against gold farmers is what ultimately caused me to leave. Every major town area was full to the brim with chat spam. Face of Mankind: For the same reasons I mentioned in why I added the title, Face of Mankind lasted long enough on my hard drive for me to not consider even adding it to this list. Statistics: Part of my New Year’s resolution was to be a little more sensible with my purchases. So, naturally, I bought a new laptop, and began working on the MMO Fallout podcast. Working on that podcast gave me more of an insight into my own, shall I say “addiction,” than I had foreseen, and it wasn’t long after that that I canceled my preorder for Star Trek Online. I was playing MMOs but really not getting anywhere, stuck in the low level zone forever. I’ve always had something of an interesting perdicament here on MMO Fallout. Despite all of the titles I list, I am really only paying for one or two games at a time in most situations. It appears that I am paying more, or that someone else is paying for me, but that is simply not the case.

Epic Day.

Started off solo’ing tribriding, then update happened after like 3 sets so I logged, then Austin was online so we went duo tribrid and I gotta say, I love tribriding, we was going to hybrid all week but going to tribrid now, heres the pics from the trips: Austin left to shower so I finished the trip solo’ing for like hour and 10mins Back to duo’ing with Austin ~@Dk Tab@~ 31,190,236 gp+ ~Randomtimez.~ Calling for drops tbh:

60 Range

I achieved level 60 range yesterday.  I did it by ranging werewolves in Canifas.  Werewolves give the exact same amount of experience as lesser demons do only it is far less crowded.  On top of that they drop wolf bones which sell for 450 gp on the grand exchange.  They also drop rune med helms.  They can also be ranged from behind numerous safe spots inside the bar.
