Mod Chris E posted an in-detailed explanation (following Mod Nick’s short evaluation of the problem that occured). I re-post it below, followed by my take on the situation. “Perhaps I can explain a little more why we couldn’t release the game content this week, even though the problem only resides in the game engine. When we build our Release Candidate (RC) build of the game ready for next week’s update, we build/compile all the content (scripts, models, graphics etc) against the RC build of the game engine. In this case, we have been building a new engine version for the last two weeks with numerous new features and bug fixes. At the end of last week, this was ready so we pushed it to RC. We then built the game content against it ready for launch this week. On Monday, during final compatibility testing that we do every week, our QA team noticed a problem with some Intel chipsets and HD. At this point, it meant we couldn’t do what we call a ‘Content Only’ update, because the content was built depending on the latest version of the engine, and wouldn’t work on the engine currently running on the live worlds. Whilst rolling back the build systems for the engine and content is possible, it would have taken so much time that we probably wouldn’t have been able to release the content this week anyway (and besides, some of the new content relied on new engine features!). I’m pleased to be able to say we have resolved the Intel issue (although our HD developer has been tearing his hair out most of the week!), so hopefully you will see the update early next week, barring any further problems. “ Perfectly logical and justifiable. Having worked in a company with multiple builds which incremented each time, I can understand the problems you had here. I was not at all surprised that it was a game engine bug. I remain intrigued as to why the Intel chipsets had a specific problem from a CompSci point of view, clearly your work here is on a much lower level than I expected (normal Java-OpenGL work doesn’t involve chipset specific coding to my knowledge). I’m still wondering what portion of the audience this affected – to quote my post from Qeltar’s thread: “It’s difficult for anyone to accurately analyse the possible effect of the update on the number of users affected unless you have the data on your users. Jagex clearly do have this data. One specific chipset on one operating system, which itself has a maximum of a 22% general market share in December 09, would seem like a bad reason to delay an update in my opinion. A few things differ however. Vista may be more common on the RuneScape user base than in the general public. This is difficult to argue for – there’s no specific reason it should be. The main factor however is that despite the wide range of actual hardware, the relative popularity of specific chipsets (for example the Core 2 Duo family) coupled with the fact that it may actually be multiple highly related families (I’m not entirely sure what the incremental changes are on differing chipsets and it’s stupid to try and speculate), of which only one they have the resources to test (they probably don’t have 1 chipset from each Intel processor family), means that it could be a larger than expected proportion. So there is the possibility that it affects (given the dominance of Intel these days) upto and maybe above 20% of their market, it’s hardly surprising that they decided to wait.”

I made the choice of returning to cutting Ivy for experience, this method is said to bring about 70k-80k exp/hour. So far I have found this claim to be correct. Ivy requires 68 Woodcutting to cut and it gains you 332.5 experience for every piece of Ivy cut. The beauty part of this magic vine is that it does not fill up your inventory! As you can imagine this is quite beneficial because you can literally click an Ivy, start cutting and switch to something else in your browser. Ivy is totally AFKable. There are some drawbacks to Ivy, for one you don’t make any money off it other than bird’s nests (suggestion: wear a strung rabbit’s foot to increase your nest drops dramatically, 20 Hunter required) and another is some areas can be full, however this may be due to its releases just a little while ago. Some areas where Ivy can be cut include: North wall of Varrock Palace , near the Yew trees. (4 Ivy spots) South-east outer wall of Varrock Palace , next to tree Farming patch. (5 Ivy spots) North side of the north wall of Falador , a little west from Standing stones location. (7 Ivy spots) South side of the south wall of Falador , a little north of the allotment patch. (7 Ivy spots) South-east of Taverley , near the Hot air balloon. (5 Ivy spots) East wall of East Ardougne church, just west of Handelmort’s Mansion. (5 Ivy spots) North side of the north wall of Yanille , south-east of Yanille Dungeon. (6 Ivy spots) South wall of Castle Wars , south of the Saradomin base. (7 Ivy spots) I suggest the last option, South wall of Castle Wars. This area includes 7 individual spotswhere you can cut Ivy and the area in general isn’t usually packed with players. If you want quick and extremely easy Woodcutting experience, I recommend cutting Ivy!
Becoming a White Knight is a long and tedious task. There are a lot of requirements. First, I needed 32 Quest Points. To do that meant I had to do a lot of quests and on top of that each quest had its own requirements as well. Once I got 32 quest points, it was time to do the 3 quests needed to become a White Knight. They are Black Knights Fortress, Recruitment Drive, and Wanted! Once I had completed those quests, I earned the right to wear the White Knight Armour, but not to buy it from Sir Vynn. To do that I had to become a MASTER White Knight and that required killing 1200 level 33 Black Knights. Let me tell you that felt like forever, but on the positive side, I went up 10 attack levels and 10 strength levels as well! So now, I am a Master White Knight, with 50 Attack, and 60 Strength! As a reward for my efforts, Ze Jakall my clan leader promoted me to General. Now it is time to move to my next training spot, the Hill Giants!
Welcome friends and colleagues. Fantastic to have you join me! Having spent this past year immersing myself in the world of virtual worlds, I thought I’d share some of my learnings, fascination, and excitement about “virtual worlds.” My intention is to explain this stuff as I have been doing all year to my non-techie friends and family – in layman’s terms and spread over several posts. In this first post, I’ll start with broad definitions – the “what are they?” descriptions. In subsequent posts, I’ll talk about the technical issues (from a humble marketer’s POV) that’s influencing the mass-adoption of virtual worlds new technologies that can/may help drive mass-adoption I have a huge and ever-growing list of virtual worlds for kids references for super cutting-edge virtual technologies virtual world resources This is definitely a work-in-progress document so feel free to chime in anytime. And keep checking back as I’ll add the links to the facts and other references mentioned as I find the time. Discovery. My personal fascination with virtual worlds started very skeptically with Runescape, a medieval-themed MMORPG (that’s a Massive, Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that my son was so interested in playing. After the usual parental list of don’ts, don’t you dare, and heck-no’s, I paid and let him play. Fortunately for me, the fascination didn’t last long for him but it did for me. Shortly thereafter, my daughter was introduced to Club Penguin and I was hooked! My kids were too of course, but as a parent, I thought Club Penguin absolutely brilliant. There were so many parent-friendly, kid-friendly features in this thing, I was amazed. Deservedly so, Club Penguin took off and was good, clean fun, eventually being acquired by Disney (the KOD, imho – more about that in another post). Definitions. Dictionary.com defines virtual worlds as a Main Entry: virtual environment Part of Speech: n Definition: a computer-generated, three-dimensional representation of a setting in which the user of the technology perceives themselves to be and within which interaction takes place; also called virtual landscape, virtual space, virtual world This definition doesn’t quite cover it for me. The “perceives themselves to be…” seems to me to more aptly apply to an immersive virtual environment (see below). So while still a noun, my definition of a virtual environment is a bit looser: a computer-generated, three-dimensional -like representation of a place. The place itself - what it looks like, where it is, and what you do there - is up to the creators. Virtual representations of yourself in these worlds are called Avatars. After attending FountainBlue’s Virtual World panel early in the year, I was surprised at how broad the virtual world space actually is. After trying to explain what I’ve been doing and what I’ve been learning to people, I’ve found that the easiest way to describe virtual worlds is by their most common applications: Consumer entertainment sites for kids/teens and adults. Generally organized around games and social networking. Examples of this are Second Life, World of Warcraft, Club Penguin, Sony PlayStation Home, There.com, GaiaOnline.com The number and pace of virtual world launches for kids is absolutely dizzying. I’ll publish my what-has-to-be-only-a-partial list in another post. Virtual goods. A growing, billion dollar industry in its own right comes from the sale of virtual goods. I view this really as a subset of consumer entertainment but it’s poised to make more money than most existing consumer-oriented virtual worlds, if not already. The bulk of Second Life’s revenues are from the sales of virtual goods and SL predicts that transaction figure to be in the ballpark of $450 million for 2009. Companies include Virtual Greats.com, Xstreet SL (Second Life) Enterprise-level programs. Places for distributed workforces or people to meet, congregate, share, and/or collaborate. This would be things like internal meetings with people and their Avatars from all over the globe in real time. Forterra’s OLIVE, Second Life Enterprise, Sun’s Wonderland. Business conferences. InXpo, ON24, Unisfair. Trainings. Role playing and education. Big when combined with the augmented reality or immersive experience (below). Virtualization for education and research. NASA’s virtualization of the moon. Virtualization of how things work. Not necessarily or always a virtual environment for Avatars to roam around in but a big and important part of the virtual world special interest group (or SIG). The flip of virtual worlds are immersive experiences – bringing virtual data to the real world in real time. Wearing augmented reality headsets to physically experience the virtual environment. Space trainings, military trainings. Simulators. Nokia is working on overlaying real time geolocations with virtual data through web-enabled cameras or camera phones to enhance your immediate experiences. Send a photo of where you are and get all sorts of information about your immediate surrounding area: historical or architectural references to the best place for sushi. These are broad applications and this is where the bulk of the work – either research, start-ups, or revenue-generating companies – is happening. Comments, corrections, suggestions, thoughts?
Runescape was a very fun game were i met some good friends, I started my first acount in 2005, when my friends told about it, it was my first MMORPG. I didn’t know what to do when i first logged on, the world was just… big. Once out of tutorial island, my friends helped me and gave me some money, the first thing i did was woodcutting, I sold all wood i had to the general shop, a thing i would later regret, so when i heard players would pay 80x the price of the general shop I was shocked, when I tought “this is getting boring” I moved to mining, I leveled up quickly and got 99 mining, but i still had a money shortage, so i began reading guides about how to earn money quickly, when they said there is no real quick wasy to earn money in the free world, i bought a Runescape Membership Card – 90 Days , the member world was great, there were more skills i could practice and also a bigger world to eplore. When i trained some more skills up to 99 it became boring, and i stopped with it.

The air was fresh; I had just gotten on Runescape and was ready for a trip to General Graardor when all of a sudden something strange happened. My mouse was randomly double clicking! I found myself eating sharks at full hitpoints, drinking prayer potions, and randomly depositing/withdrawing more items than I needed. This had to be stopped. I read up on the topic online; it seemed my left mouse button switch was broken. The logical thing to do was to take the mouse apart and look for some way to fix the button switch, right? Well if you’re me, that was the worst option. So guess what I did? I went ahead and pried apart my mouse, only to find I couldn’t get to the button switch. Upon putting the mouse back together, I suddenly realized something: Both buttons are now horribly jammed and my mouse is basically unusable. You know what that means? I just wasted $20 trying to fix what may not have been the problem. Lesson learned: Option A isn’t always better than Option B So for those of you having troubles with your mouse, consider problems with drivers and compatibility among other things before taking your mouse apart and deeming it shit.
After I got through the beginners tutorial, I made my way to the city of Varrok. When I got there, I immediately set a bank pin and logged out. I then set my recovery questions and logged back in and headed for the Stronghold of Player Safety. This was very easy to do and when I was done, I had 10k in cash, 2 experience lamps and a pair of gloves. I immediately put both experience lamps on magic and that immediately gave me a magic level of 10! I then logged out and became a member. Members world is much easier to do things on and it is a whole lot more fun in general. It is only a lousy $5.95 a month and to me that is a small price to pay for all the privileges and fun involved.
