Thanks to everyone who participated in this video! (PE FOREVER) sorry about the shortage! I’ll never forget you friends! =D -Wadleblast1 WORD dogmatic [dawg- mat -ik, dog-] 1. of, pertaining to, or of the nature of a dogma or dogmas; doctrinal 2. asserting opinions in a doctrinaire or arrogant manner; opinionated BIRTHDAY Sir Isaac Newton (1643) , Jacob Grimm (1785) , Don Shula (1930) , Dyan Cannon (1937) , Bernard Sumner (1956) , Patty Loveless (1957) , Matt Frewer (1958) , Michael Stipe (1960) , Dave Foley (1963) , Julia Ormond (1965) , David Berman (1967) STANDPOINT So, not only is it the the end of a year, it’s the end of a decade. Which, in my estimation, has more than quadrupled the annual year-in-review nonsense. What is the use of exploring what’s transpired in the last 365 days? Or the last 3,652.42199? (That’s exactly how many days are in a decade which kind of weirds me out.) In any case, I’m only a human being. And so I’ve read some of these lists. Apparently, 2009 is one most people would like to see flushed down the toilet with extreme prejudice. (I’m one of them, but not due to anything outside of my own personal experience.) This past year was, according to most accounts, one filled with tantamount portions of both doom and gloom. And, while I guess everyone is right and everything is sort of shitty, I think it’s wholly irrefutable things could be worse. And, the reason is this: In the course of perusing and pondering all the recent trials and tribulations of our downtrodden society, I came upon Yahoo!’s Year In Review – Top 10 Searches . I concluded shit can’t be all that bad after reading what people seem to actually care about. Despite the times, we’ve clearly got an advantage over any other generation that came before us because, in the internet, we’ve got a vast archive of information that can help better pretty much any situation. I was fully expecting terms like, “financial help,” and “employment opportunities,” to appear somewhere on a list of top searches by a group of individuals who spend most of its time worrying about the future. But, as happens more than not, people leave me disappointed. Instead of searching for help, everyone’s searching for crap. The top search term of the year was Michael Jackson . Before his untimely death, only the most ardent fans truly seemed to care about whatever odd capers Jacko was involved in. Once he died, everyone took an active interest and felt the need to seek out information on someone they pretty much knew everything about in the first place. The rest of the top search list was, in order, The Twilight Saga , WWE , Megan Fox , Britney Spears , Naruto (whatever the fuck that is) , American Idol , Kim Kardashian , NASCAR and Rune Scape (again, huh?). Once finding this data, I decided that, hey, everything’s going to be just fine. Because, if life was as seriously dismal as most would have us believe, we’d probably spend less time question for knowledge on tweener flicks, supposed sports, irrelevant celebrities, reality television and, again, whatever those other two are. Let’s just relax people and collectively ease back from the ledge. If, as as culture, we’re concerning ourselves with such inconsequential nonsense on the internet, how ominous could it really be? Right? QUOTATION You know, Hitler wanted to be an artist. At eighteen, he took his inheritance, seven hundred kronen, and moved to Vienna to live and study. He applied to the Academy of Fine Arts and later to the School of Architecture. Ever see one of his paintings? Neither have I. Resistance beat him. Call it overstatement but I’ll say it anyway: it was easier for Hitler to start World War II than it was for him to face a blank square of canvas. ? Steven Pressfield TUNE I’m fully aware of the fact that, in terms of music, I’ve a tendency to circulate around certain artists. Sorry. Some of these folks are just too damn good. I found “New Amsterdam” on vodpod (a site I feel you should most likely be checking out) over the weekend and decided to share one of my favorite Elvis Costello offerings. GALLIMAUFRY ? I’m disgusted to report that even I’m not immune to the controversial MTV “reality” show Jersey Shore . The creators should be rounded up, along with anyone remotely involved including the cast, stuffed into a bag and hammertossed into the ocean. That said, I’m still watching it. Shit, I’m watching it right now. Christ. ? It seems the Philadelphia Eagles ‘ run of stepping ass-backward into big piles of sunshine has come to a close. Yesterday’s shutout loss the Dallas Cowboys was pretty embarrassing. Luckily, instead of enjoying the bye week they’d have earned from a victory, the whole team gets to go back to Dallas next week and do it all over again. ? Jeff Bridges might finally get his due with an Oscar nod this year for his role in Crazy Heart . About effing time. I am continually amazed at the search terms that bring people to my blog. Some of the latest include: is Ralph Lauren looking for models: Boy, not only do you like me you think I’m pretty, too! moose turd cookies: Hey! My cooking isn’t THAT bad! brazilian skin colour politically correct: Politically correct skin colour? Huh? wrinkled boobs: Yes. Still. Almost every day boobs search here: I wondered that every day throughout puberty dirty mom son: Searched for and sent here more often than I’d like gorgeous young girls: Now that’s better. Hey. Wait…….ewwwwww. Yahoo is doing its year in review . They have many categories but the one that interested me? Top 10 Searches for 2009. Michael Jackson – Yes, his death was tragic. Yes, he was loved worldwide. Yes, much of his entertaining was genius. Yes, I had all of the Jackson 5’s albums as a kid. But I was so over him once he became physically unrecognizable. The man had issues (on many levels) and all close to him should feel horrible that they didn’t do more to help him. The Twilight Saga – I don’t get it. My daughter does. She loved the series. She went to the 12:01am showing when the movie premiered. I tried reading the first novel but got bored. I see the appeal for teens. I just don’t get the appeal of women my age drooling over a teen vampire. We’d be disgusted if the genders were reversed. WWE – Seriously? People still watch that stuff? Megan Fox – I still couldn’t pick her out in a line-up. Britney Spears – A pop sensation, yes. And continues to be popular. She’s been on Yahoo’s Top 10 Search list for the past 5 years. My guess is the searches are by voyeurs relishing in the latest news of her twisted, messed up private life, not for her entertainment skills. And that’s just sad. Naruto Manga – An exotic Asian dish? A helpful Japanese phrase? Nope. Evidently it’s an anime series on Cartoon Network. Never seen it. American Idol - This I’ve heard of. And I’m an unashamed fan of the show. I find it fascinating. I wish this show had been around when I was in my twenties. Kim Kardashian – I just had to click back to the site to make sure I was spelling her name correctly. She has sisters, too, right? And they have a reality TV show? (I’m testing my knowledge here, so give me a sec.) Yep. I was right. But have I ever seen the show? Never. NASCAR – Again, really? People still watch this stuff? Runescape - Ok. It’s sci- fi, right? (Just guessing from the name) Yes. It’s the most popular free online role-playing game in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records. And I’ve never heard of it. Man. I am officially old. Yay! It’s finally here! This took the whole week to make, and I think it didn’t turn out too bad. I worked REALLY hard on this, so please NO BAD COMMENTS! Thunder hates Christmas, so an elf turns him into Santa! Will Thunder last as Santa? Find out! Welcome friends and colleagues. Fantastic to have you join me! Having spent this past year immersing myself in the world of virtual worlds, I thought I’d share some of my learnings, fascination, and excitement about “virtual worlds.” My intention is to explain this stuff as I have been doing all year to my non-techie friends and family – in layman’s terms and spread over several posts. In this first post, I’ll start with broad definitions – the “what are they?” descriptions. In subsequent posts, I’ll talk about the technical issues (from a humble marketer’s POV) that’s influencing the mass-adoption of virtual worlds new technologies that can/may help drive mass-adoption I have a huge and ever-growing list of virtual worlds for kids references for super cutting-edge virtual technologies virtual world resources This is definitely a work-in-progress document so feel free to chime in anytime. And keep checking back as I’ll add the links to the facts and other references mentioned as I find the time. Discovery. My personal fascination with virtual worlds started very skeptically with Runescape, a medieval-themed MMORPG (that’s a Massive, Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that my son was so interested in playing. After the usual parental list of don’ts, don’t you dare, and heck-no’s, I paid and let him play. Fortunately for me, the fascination didn’t last long for him but it did for me. Shortly thereafter, my daughter was introduced to Club Penguin and I was hooked! My kids were too of course, but as a parent, I thought Club Penguin absolutely brilliant. There were so many parent-friendly, kid-friendly features in this thing, I was amazed. Deservedly so, Club Penguin took off and was good, clean fun, eventually being acquired by Disney (the KOD, imho – more about that in another post). Definitions. Dictionary.com defines virtual worlds as a Main Entry: virtual environment Part of Speech: n Definition: a computer-generated, three-dimensional representation of a setting in which the user of the technology perceives themselves to be and within which interaction takes place; also called virtual landscape, virtual space, virtual world This definition doesn’t quite cover it for me. The “perceives themselves to be…” seems to me to more aptly apply to an immersive virtual environment (see below). So while still a noun, my definition of a virtual environment is a bit looser: a computer-generated, three-dimensional -like representation of a place. The place itself - what it looks like, where it is, and what you do there - is up to the creators. Virtual representations of yourself in these worlds are called Avatars. After attending FountainBlue’s Virtual World panel early in the year, I was surprised at how broad the virtual world space actually is. After trying to explain what I’ve been doing and what I’ve been learning to people, I’ve found that the easiest way to describe virtual worlds is by their most common applications: Consumer entertainment sites for kids/teens and adults. Generally organized around games and social networking. Examples of this are Second Life, World of Warcraft, Club Penguin, Sony PlayStation Home, There.com, GaiaOnline.com The number and pace of virtual world launches for kids is absolutely dizzying. I’ll publish my what-has-to-be-only-a-partial list in another post. Virtual goods. A growing, billion dollar industry in its own right comes from the sale of virtual goods. I view this really as a subset of consumer entertainment but it’s poised to make more money than most existing consumer-oriented virtual worlds, if not already. The bulk of Second Life’s revenues are from the sales of virtual goods and SL predicts that transaction figure to be in the ballpark of $450 million for 2009. Companies include Virtual Greats.com, Xstreet SL (Second Life) Enterprise-level programs. Places for distributed workforces or people to meet, congregate, share, and/or collaborate. This would be things like internal meetings with people and their Avatars from all over the globe in real time. Forterra’s OLIVE, Second Life Enterprise, Sun’s Wonderland. Business conferences. InXpo, ON24, Unisfair. Trainings. Role playing and education. Big when combined with the augmented reality or immersive experience (below). Virtualization for education and research. NASA’s virtualization of the moon. Virtualization of how things work. Not necessarily or always a virtual environment for Avatars to roam around in but a big and important part of the virtual world special interest group (or SIG). The flip of virtual worlds are immersive experiences – bringing virtual data to the real world in real time. Wearing augmented reality headsets to physically experience the virtual environment. Space trainings, military trainings. Simulators. Nokia is working on overlaying real time geolocations with virtual data through web-enabled cameras or camera phones to enhance your immediate experiences. Send a photo of where you are and get all sorts of information about your immediate surrounding area: historical or architectural references to the best place for sushi. These are broad applications and this is where the bulk of the work – either research, start-ups, or revenue-generating companies – is happening.
